Janette Murrungun

Janette Murrungun is an experienced weaver who works with ghost-net material and pandanus. Her Country is Gulurrj (Rocky Point). She holds deep knowledge about using plants for string-making, natural dyeing and traditional weaving, a skill passed down from her mother and grandmother. For this exhibition, she has woven colourful yirr (string bags) using handspun natural fibres and nylon retrieved from ghost nets that wash up near her community of Numbulwar, on the Gulf of Carpentaria in southeastern Arnhem Land. Women across Arnhem Land have traditionally used yirr as an all-purpose carrier bag, ideal for holding seafood, shellfish, roots and bush food.
