Make your own unique + refillable journals. Add collage to upcycled vintage books covers and learn to create never-ending folios of pages.

In this workshop you’ll learn creative book making and binding techniques under the expert tuition of textile artist Barbara Millward. The art journal you’ll create is perfect for filling with writing, painting, poetry, whatever your heart’s desire!

What to expect in this workshop:

The workshop is split into two distinct sessions. In the morning you’ll learn and complete steps to prepare your upcycled vintage book cover and then create mixed media collage to adorn your art journal cover.

In the afternoon session, you’ll learn to how create folios of pages and make the decorative, stitched elastic binding bands to bring your art journal together.

What’s included:

Friendly, expert tuition and all the equipment that you’ll need to make your art journal.

Most materials are included, we will certainly have a stash of crafty goodness to choose from, however participants are welcome to bring along any:

Collage papers that you might like to use. This could include: painted and printed papers, scrapbooking paper, magazines… anything you fancy as long as it can be glued down.
Ribbons, cords or beads, anything special that you’d like to include on the spine of your journal.
Morning and afternoon tea including a selection of tea and plunger coffee plus light refreshments are included. A half an hour lunch break has been scheduled and participants are encouraged to either bring their lunch along or visit the local cafes and purchase lunch.

Location + COVID Safe Protocols

This workshop will take place in our sunny ground floor Blanket Room Foyer at Fabrik, look out for directional signage on the day.

Participants are asked to abide by SA Health COVID safe protocols in place at the time of the workshop and only attend if they are feeling well.

Meet your maker:

Barbara Millward has been passionately creative her whole life. As a resident of the Adelaide Hills Barbara is constantly inspired by nature. Barbara primarily works with textiles and mixed media, producing artwork and jewellery as well as artists books. A source of never ending inspiration for Barbara is found in recycled and vintage materials, as well as the patina and weather in the built and natural environment.

Other information:

This workshop is suitable for beginners. Participants aged 16 and under need to be accompanied by a participating adult.

The class size will be capped at 10 participants to ensure lots opportunity for conversation and learning. However, we do need a minimum of 6 participants to proceed (lots of communication and a full refund would be made to those who have registered in this instance.)
