Bring along ‘that busted thing’, the textile that you still love dearly and would mend if only you knew how. Mary knows and will show us how.
In this workshop you could darn worn socks, repair holes in knits or wovens, fix a hem, sew on buttons or mend and reinforce your jeans with bold, visible running stitches.
Spend a few hours slow stitching with fellow good folks + cups of tea with our experienced and dedicated mending-mentor, Mary Heath.
Mary brings a lifetime of mending experiences to share with us which all happens to fit quite nicely within her commitment to sustainable textile practices. Mary also exhibited at Fabrik in our Fringe 2022 exhibition Retelling, where artists explored the gentle, rich, radical philosophy of slow making and repurposing, while honoring and adding to the stories that lie latent within the ordinary objects in our lives. (If you visited Retelling, you may recognise the flour -bag shirt in the image promoting this workshop).
No previous sewing skills are required, but please bring along your own garment/s and anything that you might like to use to mend it with, such as a piece of fave fabric to use as a patch or some just-right thread, or the button you saved to sew back on!
We’ll also have a stash of fabric and threads to choose from, an ironing station and a sewing machine on standby.
The workshop fee includes expert tuition, access to our stash + cups of tea and treats.
More about Mary can be found at Mary’s blog Local & Bespoke.
